Completed in June, 2007
SU-122 is a self-propelled gun from the Russian Army during the Second War World. It is used as an anti-tank weapon; the platform is the one for the T-34. My guess is that the "122" refers to the calibre of its assault gun; some Russian torpedoes also use their specifications as their names, the 53-65 torpedo is one example.
I bought this model last year when I visited Hong Kong. I started building it shortly after I finished the King Tiger because there is one thing I am not happy about the King Tiger, namely the tracks. The King Tiger is my fourth 1:48 Tamiya tanks but I can never assemble the tracks right. Thus I try to use this model as a test bed for track assembly. Although the tracks on this SU-122 model are not perfectly done, I think I have learned the secret at the end. Paint individual track pieces first, then use cement to glue each piece onto the wheel. (Of course individual track pieces need cement to put together.) This will help the assembly a lot.
It turns out that the tracks are not the only experiment I did on this tank model. Because the side of the model box has nice diagrams of the tank in winter camouflage, they motivate me to paint the tank in white. It is evident from the diagrams that the white coat is thin and not factory-done. Therefore I did the following to simulate the weathering of this coat of white. First of all, I painted the whole tank in dark green using GSI lacquer paint. This coat of green is thicker than usual because it must withstand some abusive treatment later on. This is another reason why lacquer paint was used; it is stronger and more adhesive than acrylic paint. When the lacquer paint was completely cured, I weathered the tank a little bit with grey, black and rust paints. This weathering procedure was not done in detail because a thin layer of Tamiya acrylic white will cover the whole body later on. Since the white coat is thin, the previously applied weathering was not total wasted. It is time to simulate the scratches on the thin coat of white on the real counterparts. I used a cotton swab moisten with enamel thinner to rub off some of the white paint. In my humble opinion, this is the simplest way to simulate this kind of weathering. In fact, the rubbing was done along side with a washing process. As such, some of the weathering between the green and white coat was revealed. Having said that, another weathering process was applied using grey, black and rust after the rubbing. This weathering process is in fact an improvement over the one for Sturmgeschutz III.
